I hope that you are well.
As the nights are drawing in this autumn and winter here’s a fun outdoor (or indoor) version of the popular kids game.
The kids are going to be running around as it’s getting darker (not too dark!) it’s worth making sure that you check the area first to make sure there aren’t any hidden holes that the children could hurt themselves by falling down!
As with the traditional tag/ it games – one player is ‘it’. The player that is ‘it’ has a torch. The other players have to move around (you could have a ‘safe zone’ if you wanted – perhaps an area or a tree that if you are in/ touching you can’t be caught) without getting tagged. The player who is ‘it’ has to try and ‘catch’ another of the players – to do this the ‘it’ has to shine the torch beam onto another player, who then takes over the ‘it’ duties!
Carry on until they get tired/ bored!
Another option is to play Torch Capture The Flag…
Have two teams at oposite ends of the playing area. The teams have to try and acpture the other teams flag, without letting theirs be captured.
The teams have to creep across the playing area towards the other team, capture the flag and take it back to their base without being caught. The players are caught if the torch beam touches them – it’s up to you when happens then (I’ve played it when if you are caputyres you have to go back to where you started, or where you are then stuck in the mud and you can only move when a member of your team shines their torch beam on you).
Expect lots of cheating! I have always added a rule of not letting each team within 2m of their own flag – stops the kids sitting on their flag so the other team can’t get it!
